Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins launched on October 21, 1992 for the Game Boy. Nintendo R&D1 created this title as a sequel to the first land adventure. You play as Mario returning home to find his castle occupied by Wario. This release introduced the rival character who eventually got his own series. The story involves collecting six golden coins scattered across various levels guarded by spell-bound enemies. Later ports brought the game to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. It remains a single-player platformer focused on exploration and precise jumping mechanics without any multiplayer modes.
You cross side-scrolling stages filled with spikes, pits, and enemies like Goombas. The core loop involves finding hidden paths that often lead away from the main route to uncover new areas. You collect six golden coins to unlock the castle gates while facing level bosses at the end of each world. Power-ups include the Acorn for gliding, the Hammer for throwing attacks, and the Cappy for turning into a hat form. The controls feel tight with responsive jumps and ground pounds. Sessions usually last around 45 minutes per playthrough as you chase down every collectible. Wario mimics your movements in some sections adding a layer of difficulty to standard platforming sequences.

This game works best for fans of classic 8-bit platformers who enjoy tight controls and puzzle-like level layouts. The price on digital stores varies but usually runs around $5 depending on the region and bundle. Players can earn 10 achievements including finding all golden coins and beating Wario without taking damage. It is not a perfect game by modern standards but the charm holds up well after three decades. Skip this if you need multiplayer or complex storylines since it relies entirely on simple platforming mechanics. Pick this up if you want to see where Wario originated in a solid standalone experience.
Danger! Danger! While I was away crusading against the mystery alien Tatanga in Sarasa Land, an evil creep took over my castle and put the people of Mario Land under his control with a magic spell. This intruder goes by the name of Wario. He mimics my appearance, and has tried to steal my castle many times. It seems he has succeeded this time. Wario has scattered the 6 Golden Coins from my castle all over Mario Land. These Golden Coins are guarded by those under Wario's spell. Without these coins, we can't get into the castle to deal with Wario. We must collect the 6 coins, attack Wario in the castle, and save everybody! It’s time to set out on our mission!!
