About Super Metroid

Super Metroid launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in March 1994 from developer Nintendo R&D1. You play as Samus Aran, a bounty hunter returning to planet Zebes after Space Pirates steal the last Metroid egg and threaten the galaxy again. The game mixes third-person shooting with platforming and exploration in a dark sci-fi setting. It originally arrived on SNES but later saw ports on Wii U, Wii, and New Nintendo 3DS. This single-player title features side-scrolling action where you navigate cave-riddled worlds filled with hostile enemies and hidden secrets. Samus starts without her full power suit and must find upgrades to progress further into the planet's depths while hunting down Ridley and Mother Brain.

Gameplay

You move Samus through non-linear maps filled with deadly creatures and environmental hazards. Your primary tools are a variety of beam weapons that change how you interact with the environment. Early on you rely on basic shots, but finding items like the Grappling Beam lets you swing across wide gaps or reach new areas. The X-Ray Scope helps you spot hidden passages and enemies behind walls. You can jump, duck, and shoot in all directions while managing your energy tank and missile count. Exploration drives the experience since you must backtrack to areas you could not access before. Combat feels tight, requiring precise timing to dodge attacks from bosses like Ridley or the final Mother Brain encounter.

What Players Think

Critics and players alike rate this title highly on our platform. The IGDB score sits at 96.1 out of 100 based on 1013 ratings. Our community data shows strong emotional reactions, with four votes labeling the experience as Emotional. Two other users noted the intense difficulty and story-driven nature of the adventure. Some even describe it as Wholesome despite the grim narrative. Most players invest a significant amount of time in completing every objective. The average playtime reflects a deep commitment to uncovering all secrets within Zebes. Review snippets from our database often highlight how the game stands out for its atmosphere and level design. No other site tracks these specific mood votes or detailed completion stats alongside the raw score data we possess.

PlayPile's Take

This is a must-play for anyone interested in classic action-adventure games. The price varies depending on which platform you choose, but the SNES version offers the original experience while ports add convenience. You will earn numerous achievements as you track down every item and defeat all bosses. The game does not hold your hand, so expect to die often while learning enemy patterns. It is not a casual pick for quick sessions since it demands patience and persistence. If you want a challenging single-player campaign with excellent level design, this title delivers exactly that.

Storyline

After Samus completed her mission and eradicated the entire Metroid population on SR388 as commanded by the Galactic Federation (sans the Metroid Hatchling, which she nicknamed "Baby"), she brought the Hatchling to the Ceres Space Colony for research. However, shortly after she left, she received a distress signal from the Station and returned to investigate. When Samus arrives at the Space Science Academy where the Baby was being studied, she finds all the scientists slaughtered and the containment unit that held the Baby missing. Upon further exploration of the Station, she finds the Baby in a small capsule. As she approaches, Ridley appears and grabs the capsule. After a brief battle, Samus repels Ridley, and he activates a self-destruct sequence to destroy Ceres. After escaping the explosion, Ridley flees to Zebes, and Samus goes after him.
