Super Puyo Puyo Tsu Remix is a fast-paced puzzle game where players match colorful gelatinous blocks to clear lines and blast enemies. Developed by Compile in 1996, it builds on the formula of its predecessors with a focus on competitive multiplayer. Up to four players can battle locally via split-screen, using bots to fill empty spots. The core loop mixes quick-thinking tile placement with strategic attacks that disrupt opponents. A single-player tower mode tasks you with defeating randomized foes across multiple stages. This version stands out for its expanded difficulty and social play. The tower’s EXP-based progression system forces players to balance speed and efficiency, fall short on points, and you’ll face a bonus boss or get thrown out entirely. A new Expert course adds replayability for seasoned players. Though never officially released outside Japan, it remains a cult favorite among puzzle fans for its tight mechanics and chaotic multiplayer. The Super Famicom edition’s higher EXP thresholds make it notably tougher than earlier ports, cementing its reputation as one of the series’ more punishing entries.
As opposed to the first game's linear Scenario mode, Tsu's main mode is a tower where Arle Nadja selects opponents to battle via roulette. Each "floor" of the tower has an EXP total that the player must reach in order to advance. If the player defeats all of a floor's opponents without meeting the goal, one final opponent will appear. If, after defeating this extra opponent, the player still fails to meet the goal, Arle is booted from the tower and the game ends. The EXP goals vary from version to version; for example, Super Puyo Puyo Tsu requires twice as many points to clear the first floor as the arcade or Mega Drive versions.
