"I've used phrases that evoke the monumental achievement that is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a few times in this review and I can assure you it's not hyperbolic. Despite that a lot of the old content isn't as hard-hitting the second, third, fourth, or even fifth time around, the fact that it's all here, and in a manageable file size, is more than enough. After this (and Geno/Waluigi DLC) Sakurai can rest easy."

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings together fighters from nearly every major Nintendo franchise and beyond into one massive brawler. Sora developed this title for Nintendo, releasing it on December 7, 2018, exclusively for the Switch. It is a platform fighting game where characters battle by knocking opponents off a stage instead of depleting a health bar. This entry features every character from previous games plus new arrivals like Inkling and Ridley. The game supports single player modes, multiplayer matches, and cooperative play. You can take this library of fighters anywhere since the hardware runs it on the go or at home without missing a beat.
You grab a controller and select a fighter to knock your opponent off the screen using percentages. Damage increases as you get hit, making you lighter and easier to launch. Matches move fast with dashes, aerial attacks, and shield mechanics that define the flow of combat. New additions include Final Smashes that require meter buildup and a fresh stage transition system. You can play through Adventure mode called World of Light or jump into quick local multiplayer sessions with friends. The controls feel tight and responsive whether you are using joy-cons or a pro controller. Items drop randomly to disrupt the pace, while special moves let you execute combos or recover from the edge.
PlayPile users rate this title heavily with an IGDB score of 86.6 based on 921 ratings. Critics were even more enthusiastic, giving it a 93 on Metacritic and a 92 on OpenCritic where 96.53% recommend the game. Community mood tags show users feel intense, competitive, and hardcore when playing this title. The average playtime reflects deep engagement with multiple modes available for exploration. Review snippets from major outlets highlight the chaotic fun and sheer volume of content. One reviewer noted the combination of familiar gameplay with new ideas makes it suitable for everyone. Another praised the generous features that create an exhilarating experience on the Switch system.
This game is a solid buy if you want one fighting title that covers all bases without needing other purchases. At launch it carried a standard retail price, and the achievement list tracks your progress through various modes. You will spend hours unlocking spirits or mastering characters in ranked matches. The community data shows people play this for competitive reasons rather than casual fun alone. It is not perfect since online matchmaking can be laggy at times, but the sheer roster size makes up for it. If you own a Switch and like fighting games, you should grab this immediately to access the full library of brawlers.
