Superman: The Man of Steel drops you into the cape of the Last Son of Krypton for a 2002 Xbox adventure. Developer Circus Freak designed it as a single-player romp where you switch between 3D flight, vertical scrolling, and side-scrolling action. Each level tasks you with stopping Brainiac 13’s plans to siphon Metropolis’ advanced tech. Gameplay leans on quick combat, platforming, and exploration across a city packed with hover cars, towering skyscrapers, and bullet trains. The game’s charm lies in its commitment to Superman’s classic traits. You’ll soar through a futuristic Metropolis built around the events of Superman: Y2K, where tech-upgraded buildings and gadgets make for dynamic set pieces. While the 7-level structure and dated visuals mark it as an early 2000s title, the mix of flight mechanics and scrolling perspectives still feels brisk and varied. Fans of superhero action with a touch of retro flair might find it a fun, if brief, throwback.
The story flows out of events outlined in Superman: Y2K, in which futuristic villain Brainiac 13 injected Metropolis with a technological virus. Superman was able to prevent it from spreading, but as a result of it, the city was upgraded into a true "City of Tomorrow". Huge high-tech buildings soar into the sky while hover cars and the Rail Whale bullet train travel throughout the city. As the game begins, Brainiac 13 has decided to return to Metropolis and harvest the technology that is residing in the city. This results in massive chaos and danger that Superman must stop.
