Surgical Strike is a 1995 on-rails shooter that tasks you with piloting a hovercraft through war-torn cityscapes rendered in full-motion video. Your job is to time fire button presses and directional inputs to blast enemies and navigate tight turns. Miss a beat and your vehicle explodes in a cloud of sparks while a superior officer barks at your failure. The gameplay loops around quick-time execution, locking onto targets, swapping between a Gatling gun or rockets, and avoiding obstacles as the action escalates. The game’s full-motion video tech was a standout for Sega CD at the time, blending digitized backgrounds with on-screen explosions. Player choice between weapons adds a layer of strategy despite the linear framework. With a 72% Metacritic score, it’s remembered for its tense pacing and dated but ambitious visuals. The balance between reflex-heavy shooting and methodical targeting keeps the tension high, even if the hovercraft’s path never deviates.
A Middle Eastern madman has begun launching rockets against innocent civilian population centers. The United Nations has deemed this behavior unacceptable and the secretary-general has ordered a surgical strike in an effort the curb these attacks. To that end, you are to pilot the most advanced war vehicle devised to date-- a heavily armored and armed hovercraft. The elite Special Forces unit, The Surgical Strike Team, have been called into action. High-tech urban guerrillas are attacking innocent people but once they're done with their carnage they fade back into the landscape. In a very delicate way, the Team must find these hidden enemies and get rid of them without harming innocent citizens. Inside your hovercraft, you can charge at the violent creatures, turn 180 degrees to watch your own back and explore new uncharted areas. You have a choice of weaponry choose the 30MM Gatling gun or the laser-guided rockets. AWACs C-130's hover above and give you pointers, plus on-board mapping allows you to zero in on hidden emplacements.
