Swordquest Waterworld is a 1983 Atari 2600 adventure game that splits its story between two characters and two environments. Players follow twin siblings separated on a mystical world, one navigating a frozen ship, the other a submerged kingdom, each pursuing a mythical artifact. The game requires solving environmental puzzles and managing limited resources, with success tied to a larger contest that linked all Swordquest titles. A physical comic book shipped with the game contained partial answers to a real-world puzzle meant to uncover a grand prize. The game’s dual-narrative structure was rare for its era, offering distinct challenges for each character path. Its connection to a tangible offline mystery and split-screen design set it apart, though technical limitations kept it from realizing its ambitious concepts. Now mostly forgotten, it remains a footnote in retro gaming circles for its quirky blend of physical and digital play.
Upon reaching Waterworld, the twins become separated. Tara travels to a ship made of ice, somehow forgets her name, and meets Cap'n Frost, who desires to find the "Crown of Life" and rule Waterworld. Meanwhile, Torr travels to an undersea kingdom, forgets his name as well and meets the city's ex-queen Aquana, who desires to find the "Crown of Life" in order to regain her throne. After a brief war between the ex-queen and captain, Herminus sets the twins to duel each other. They then pray to their deities for guidance, which summons Mentorr who allows them to regain their memories. The twins throw down their swords, causing the crown to be revealed and split in half. Each half is given to both the ex-queen and the captain, who then rule as equals. The "Sword of Ultimate Sorcery" then transports the twins to Airworld where they would have to do battle with King Tyrannus and Konjuro.
