Sylphia is a vertical scrolling shooter where you control a warrior reborn as a powerful Sylphid. The game follows her quest to avenge her fallen city, battling waves of enemies across eight stages. Gameplay focuses on dodging, shooting, and managing upgrades. Your starting weapon evolves through four elemental types fire, air, water, and earth each with a unique sub weapon like homing fireballs or reverse firing. A limited-use special attack clears screens but must be saved for tough spots. Power ups drop throughout including extra lives, health-boosting gems, and orbs that enhance weapon strength. The stage design mixes dense bullet patterns with open stretches requiring precise movement. The game’s blend of mythological storytelling and deep weapon customization stands out. Each elemental upgrade tree changes how you approach enemies, with sub weapons adding tactical layers. While the 1993 Turbografx-16 visuals feel dated, the tight controls and escalating difficulty keep it engaging. A small but dedicated retro shooter community notes its underrated challenge and rewarding progression. The PC Engine CD version adds minor graphical tweaks but doesn’t drastically alter the experience. Sylphia remains a niche pick for those craving classic vertical shooters with permadeath stakes and a focus on mastery over flash.
