About

Tecmo World Soccer '96 is a straightforward 2D soccer title with 32 teams split across eight global regions. Each squad has distinct formations and ratings in speed, power, and press. Players use buttons to short-pass, long-pass, or shoot while defending involves switching control or sliding tackles. The game shifts to a mini-feinting screen during one-on-one confrontations, adding a layer of choice to direct matchups. Split-screen mode lets two players face off locally. The feinting mechanic during face-offs sets this apart from other 2D soccer games of the era. While not as visually detailed as later entries, its simple control scheme and competitive local multiplayer earned it a cult following among retro sports fans. With 32 teams and split-screen support, it remains a niche pick for arcade-style soccer action. Some Neo Geo MVS cabinets still feature it in arcades that retain classic hardware.
