Telengard casts you as a lone adventurer descending a large 50-level dungeon where every step risks ambush. You roll stats like Strength and Charisma upfront, then navigate a maze of 200x200 rooms per level, battling foes and scavenging loot. Real-time action in the DOS version keeps you on edge, monsters pounce even when you pause. Defeat enemies or uncover treasure to gain experience, level up, and unlock stronger spells. The dungeon hides surprises beyond combat: chests, altars, and cursed fountains alter your journey in unpredictable ways. What sticks is the relentless tension. With no save points, one misstep means respawning at the top. The sheer scale of the dungeon, each level a grid of secrets, feels staggering for a 1982 title. Some creatures might spare you if your Charisma rolls check out, but most want you dead. Though its graphics feel primitive by today’s standards, Telengard’s blend of permadeath stakes and procedural exploration laid groundwork for modern roguelikes. Old school fans rate it as a brutal but fair test of luck and strategy.
Nobody knows who built the great underground labyrinth called Telengard. Some say that the souls that perish there feed some unspeakable demon. Others say that it is a testing ground for wizards and warriors. Even the most seasoned of fighters sometimes do not return from the nethermost levels of the dungeon. But, like gamblers, even the most successful of adventurers return again and again down into the circular stairways tomblike corridors of Telengard, risking their very lives for gold, treasure and magical powers.
