About Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins dropped on the PlayStation in February 1998 as a defining entry for the stealth genre. Developer Acquire Corp and publisher Activision created this action-adventure title set against a backdrop of feudal Japan mixed with local mythology. You play as either Rikimaru or Ayame, two ninjas serving Lord Gohda against the demonic forces of Mei-Oh. The game distinguishes itself by prioritizing silence over brute force, using motion capture from martial artist Sho Kosugi to ground the combat animations in reality. It remains a single-player experience that asks you to move quietly through dangerous territories rather than charge forward with weapons drawn.

Gameplay

Every mission requires you to scout enemy patrol patterns before making any moves. You control your character by moving them into shadows or using the environment to break line of sight. The core loop involves sneaking past guards, taking them out silently with shuriken or blades from above, and solving simple puzzles to progress. Combat feels weighty thanks to the motion capture work, allowing for quick takedowns when spotted but punishing you heavily if you get caught. You can hide bodies in bushes or climb rooftops to gain better vantage points. A typical session sees you replaying levels until you perfect a silent run that avoids all alarms while gathering intel on the enemy's layout.

What Players Think

Critics and players have held Tenchu in high regard since launch, with a Metacritic score of 87/100 reflecting its strong reception. PlayPile data shows that community members rate the game highly for its atmosphere and mechanics. Most users report an average playtime of roughly 15 hours to complete the main campaign, though completion rates vary based on how strictly players attempt stealth challenges. Community moods often describe the experience as tense and focused rather than chaotic. Review snippets frequently highlight the satisfaction of executing a perfect silent assassination run without triggering any guards. The game maintains a dedicated following among fans of the genre who appreciate its methodical pace compared to more action-heavy contemporaries.

PlayPile's Take

This title is for players who prefer planning their route over reacting to enemies in real time. At this point, finding a copy might require hunting down used discs since it never received a modern re-release. The game offers around 20 achievements or trophies if you are chasing completion on the original hardware. It demands patience and observation skills that not every gamer possesses. If you want a straightforward shooter, look elsewhere. Tenchu works best for those who enjoy the tension of being hunted while trying to remain unseen in a world filled with historical fantasy elements.

Storyline

The game takes place in feudal Japan, introducing a pair of ninja: Rikimaru (力丸) and Ayame (彩女), members of the Azuma ninja clan since childhood. The two ninja serve the heroic Lord Gohda, and work for him as his secret spies to root out corruption and gather intelligence in his province. However, the evil demonic sorcerer Lord Mei-Oh seeks to destroy Lord Gohda, and using his demon warrior Onikage who wreaks havoc throughout Lord Gohda's province.
