The Adventures of Major Havoc splits into two distinct gameplay styles wrapped in one arcade package. The first half is a space shooter where you pilot the Catastrofighter, blasting robot ships protected by shields you must shatter first. Once cleared, you shift to a side-scrolling platformer, hopping on foot through increasingly twisted mazes of the space station. A roller-knob steers left and right, while a jump button handles gravity-defying leaps over hazards. The goal is to plant a timed bomb, escape before the station explodes, and all while racing against shrinking windows of time as levels progress. What sticks is the abrupt but clever shift between genres, a rarity in 1983. The mix of precision shooting and twitchy platforming creates a brisk, high-pressure rhythm. While not a commercial hit, its hybrid approach earned a cultish following among retro enthusiasts. Over 40 years later, its dual-phase design remains a curious footnote in early arcade experimentation.
