The Amazing Virtual Sea-Monkeys tasks you with guiding tiny brine shrimp to a Venus Shell using a babelfish-like creature named Nautila. Instead of controlling the shrimp directly, you manipulate their environment by sucking up predatory fish, removing debris, and placing food. Each level is a timed puzzle where your actions determine whether the shrimp survive their journey through a cluttered aquarium. The challenge lies in balancing speed and precision as obstacles multiply and the tank grows more chaotic. This oddball concept blends simple controls with escalating tension, offering a surprisingly engaging twist on puzzle games. Released in 2002 for PlayStation and Game Boy Advance, it leans into its quirky charm with colorful visuals and a lighthearted tone. While not a technical marvel, its creative premise and tight level design earn it a cult following among retro gamers. The indirect control mechanic feels fresh even today, making it a brief but memorable experiment in environmental puzzle-solving.
The player controls Nautila, a "babelfish" which is used to indirectly influence the environment within a huge water tank. Nautila has to suck up dangerous fish, clear rocks, supply food etc. for brine shrimps resembling the Sea Monkeys brand. The Sea Monkeys try to reach a Venus Shell as soon as they are hatched. If Nautila is not fast enough to clear the puzzles preventing the Sea Monkeys from reaching their shell, they will perish...
