About

You’re trapped in a dungeon where every exit is a death sentence. The Demon’s Forge casts you into a labyrinth of traps, monsters, and shifting corridors. Your only way out is to navigate the caverns without triggering the guards’ kill-on-sight order. As a former gladiator, you rely on combat reflexes and brutal ingenuity to survive. The game leans into its claustrophobic tension, demanding precise movement and resource management. Combat is turn-based but unforgiving, miss a step and the forge’s denizens will turn you into another nameless skeleton. Released in 1981, this DOS and Apple II title predates modern CRPGs yet feels remarkably sharp for its era. Its reputation as an impossible gauntlet is well-earned, community logs suggest a 2% completion rate among retro gamers who’ve tried. The gladiator hook adds a layer of grit, letting players lean into melee combat rather than stealth. With no save function and permadeath baked in, it’s a relic that still tests patience and skill. The fact that it’s held up this long says everything you need to know.

Storyline

Banished by the King for killing four palace guards in a pub brawl, you have been sent to the caverns of Demon's Forge. You must escape from the perils inside by passing through the caverns and reaching the sole exit that lies beyond, for if you return to the entrance the guards have orders to slay you on sight. The sentence may as well have been death for no other prisoner banished to Demon's Forge has ever escaped the caverns alive. But you were the greatest gladiator ever to serve the king, and your insticnts and training may just allow you to survive.
