"Creepy, surreal, intense and occasionally very clever indeed, The Evil Within isn't undone by its ludicrous setting โ€“ it embraces it to wonderful effect, always ready to add another layer of bizarre hand-stitched horror. But the overall experience is frustrating, never managing to fully escape that narrow field of view, making me feel as boxed in as the game's posterboy."

About The Evil Within

Tango Gameworks launched The Evil Strange in October 2014 through Bethesda Softworks. It hits PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. This title sticks to a single-player mode where you play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos. You investigate a mass murder scene that goes wrong fast. A mysterious force traps you in a twisted reality filled with dead bodies and monsters. The game mixes third-person shooting with puzzle solving inside these dark environments. Resources stay scarce, forcing you to manage what you carry carefully. It feels like a survival horror experience from 2014 that leans hard on atmosphere rather than fast-paced action.

Gameplay

You move through creepy corridors while hunting for ammo and health kits. Combat happens mostly in the third person with a focus on accuracy since bullets are limited. You encounter hideous creatures that chase you or lurk in shadows. The game demands stealth often because running out of ammo means death. Puzzles appear throughout the levels to unlock new areas or reveal story details. You cannot save your progress frequently, which adds tension to every decision. Sessions involve backtracking through the same locations after finding key items elsewhere. Controls feel tight but responsive during gunfights or when sprinting away from a monster. The pacing slows down in safe rooms while building up fear as you move forward again.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates this title at 75 out of 100 based on IGDB data from 441 users. Players describe the vibe as story-driven, with six votes highlighting the narrative focus. Four voters note cooperative elements even though the game is single-player only, perhaps referring to shared memories or online discussions. Three people call it creepy, matching the horror theme perfectly. Two others find it casual, likely referring to puzzle segments that break up combat. One user labeled it intense, which fits the high-stress moments. Average playtime suggests a solid 20-hour commitment for completionists chasing achievements. Review snippets often mention the anxiety levels during late-game sections when supplies run dry.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best if you want a tense story without needing multiplayer. The price sits around $20 on sale, making it an easy buy for horror fans. You will find 47 achievements to chase, including some tough ones for speed runs or no-damage playthroughs. The single-player structure keeps the focus entirely on Sebastian Castellanos and his nightmare. Do not expect a perfect game since the controls can feel stiff during intense chases. If you like limited resources and dark environments, this fits your list. Skip it if you want modern graphics or fast-paced action without resource management stress.

Storyline

While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel whatโ€™s behind this evil force.
