About

The Genji and the Heike Clans is a side-scrolling beat ’em up where you play a ghostly samurai seeking revenge against his clan’s enemies. The story follows Taira no Kagekiyo, resurrected after a historic battle to hunt down rival warlords and reclaim ancient relics. Gameplay shifts between three modes: standard run, giant-character boss battles, and an overhead exploration view. Combat is straightforward but rhythmic, blending sword swings and dodges across feudal Japan settings. The 1986 arcade original later appeared on mobile and the Sharp X68000, with a polished version in Namco Museum. This title stands out for its niche historical theme and varied playstyles. While less-known than Namco’s later hits, it’s praised by retro fans for its structured challenges and thematic depth. The mix of linear brawling and strategy in Plain Mode offers unexpected variety. With a cult following and a 7.5/10 average on arcade archives, it’s a solid choice for fans of old-school action with a samurai twist. Its inclusion in Namco Museum brought it to wider audiences, though it remains a sleeper hit in the developer’s catalog.

Storyline

The player controls Taira no Kagekiyo, a samurai that died in the Genpei War and revived to avenge the destruction of his clan, travelling the provinces of Japan while searching for the Imperial Regalia of Japan to face his arch-enemy Minamoto no Yoritomo, and also faces other enemies like Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Musashibō Benkei.
