About The Godfather II

The Godfather II drops you into 1958 New York and Havana after Michael Corleone names you his new underboss. EA Redwood Shores released this shooter, racer, and adventure title on April 7, 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows. You start by expanding the family empire while rivals like the Mangano clan push back. The game lets you take over businesses or destroy them to build a criminal network across open cities. A new strategy layer called The Don's View sits on top of the action so you can manage crews and territories without constant micromanagement. This sequel tries to deepen the crime simulation while keeping the brutal hand-to-hand combat fans liked from the first game.

Gameplay

You spend most minutes directing crew members with specific skills like arson or demolitions rather than doing everything alone. The BlackHand system lets you perform visceral combos and execute enemies up close without relying on cover shooting alone. You send your made men to extort shops or raid rival territories while you handle high-profile hits. The strategy interface shows a map where you place safe houses and defend existing rings from attacks by other families. Racing missions occur frequently as you need to transport goods or chase down targets across the city streets. Multiplayer modes let you bring your single-player upgrades into online wars against up to sixteen players for territory control.

What Players Think

IGDB rates The Godfather II at 67.4 out of 100 based on 94 user reviews, a score that reflects mixed feelings about the execution. Players report an average playtime of 28 hours to finish the main story, though many return to multiplayer modes for another 40 hours. The community mood splits between those who love the Don's View strategy layer and others who feel it interrupts the flow of action. Review snippets often praise the brutal combat animations but criticize the mission design in Havana as repetitive. Completion rates hover around 65 percent, suggesting a fair number of people quit before seeing the final act. Achievement hunters note that collecting all ranks takes significant grinding across both campaigns.

PlayPile's Take

This title works best for players who enjoy managing a criminal empire more than just running and gunning. The price point on secondary markets is low, making it an easy buy if you want to see the full strategy mechanics. You earn 49 achievements that track your rank and territory control, which adds some replay value beyond the story. It falls short when the open world feels empty or when the Havana missions drag on too long. Skip this if you only care about linear shooting levels without any management overhead. The multiplayer remains a decent way to test your crew against other mob bosses years after release.

Storyline

In 1958, three years after the events of the first game, elderly mobster Hyman Roth calls a meeting with the Corleone, Granados, Mangano, and Almeida families in Havana to discuss their future Cuban business prospects under the cooperative government of Fulgencio Batista. Roth announces his intentions to have his businesses divided between the four families once he retires. However, the guests become caught in the ongoing Cuban Revolution, and Corleone underboss Aldo Trapani is killed during the chaos. Don Michael Corleone, his brother Fredo, and Trapani's second-in-command, Dominic , manage to escape aboard a private plane, and Michael appoints Dominic as his new underboss, placing him in charge of the family's businesses in New York City.
