The Hayseed Knight is a visual novel with RPG and simulator flair that follows Ader, a one-eyed farmboy who somehow becomes a legendary knight through sheer luck and lies. Narrated by two unreliable voices, one an old friend trying to correct history, the other a eccentric descendant rewriting it as fanfiction, the story flips between Ader’s adventures and the struggles of his friends. Each chapter shifts perspective, blending dialogue, quirky quests, and pixelated scenes to track how lies snowball into legend. This game leans into comedy and absurdity, skewering medieval tropes with a self-aware edge. The rotating cast of misfits keeps the tone lively, while branching narratives hint at romance and mystery. Drawing from 16th-century Spanish storytelling but dressed in modern satire, it balances charm with clever twists. Available on PC, Linux, and Mac since March 2024, it’s a brisk, character-driven ride for anyone who enjoys stories where the hero might not deserve their own tale.

Storyline

The Hayseed Knight follows the story of Ader, a one-eyed farmboy with seemingly impossible dreams, who somehow becomes the most celebrated knight the kingdom of Acazhor has ever known, as told by our two narrators: an old friend of Ader, who could no longer stand-by and let history misremember him, and Lin, a self-proclaimed descendant of the Knight that sees the whole story as little more than a steamy fanfiction. Drawing from Spanish XVIth century “picaresque novel”, the story plays as a satire on knightly and courtly tropes, with a twist— the heroic protagonist is exchanged for a go-getter that lies his way into legends, never telling a whole truth. The story switches POVs every chapter, focusing on the misadventures of Ader’s friends as they deal with their own quests and worries.
