The Heirloom is a 2D adventure game centered on choices that shape a haunting story rooted in Scottish folklore. You play as Marla, a teenager tasked with caring for her younger brother after their family falls apart. The two are thrust into a remote Scottish island where their reclusive uncle guards a decaying estate and a dangerous secret. As the siblings explore the fog-shrouded town and crumbling family home, they uncover unsettling truths through environmental puzzles and dialogue options that ripple through the narrative. The game’s strength lies in its tense atmosphere and moral dilemmas. Players navigate a slow-burn mystery where every decision impacts relationships and the island’s eerie events. While not graphically flashy, the sparse design amplifies the isolation and dread. With a runtime of roughly 8, 10 hours, it leans into quiet unease over action, making it a standout for story-driven experiences with branching paths.
After tragic events, orphaned 16-year-old Marla and her younger brother Jack find themselves in the care of their only living relative — a grumpy old man desperately trying to hide the secret of a dilapidated and frightening place in which he has been a recluse for many decades. Forced to leave their home, Marla and Jack venture to faraway lands, across the ocean, to a small, nearly deserted town located in the western part of Scotland, somewhere on the Inner Hebrides. Upon arrival, the children begin to notice unexplainable and frightening things happening in and around their new home. Things the other inhabitants of the island struggle so hard to ignore.
