About

The Hostage is a choice-driven visual novel that drops you into a locked-room mystery with no context. You wake up in total darkness bound to a chair, forced to piece together fragmented memories while a cryptic captor watches from the shadows. Each decision, whether to resist, comply, or probe for clues, shifts the tone of the encounter. The story unfolds through stark dialogue and tense silence, with your character’s panic and the captor’s calm manipulations creating a psychological tug-of-war. Minimalist settings focus attention on the escalating dread and the slow reveal of why you’re there. The game stands out for its tight pacing and atmospheric pressure, using restraint as a narrative tool. While short, its 2-3 hour runtime packs a visceral punch, with branching paths leading to distinct outcomes that reward attention to dialogue. Early player feedback highlights the unsettling voice acting and the way it turns helplessness into a gameplay mechanic. Available on PC, Mac, and Linux, it’s a self-contained thriller that lingers longer than its runtime suggests.

Storyline

Awakening in a dark space, suffocated by your surroundings, one question burns bright in your mind above all others. Where am I? That first thought enters your mind as you open your eyes only to witness all-encompassing darkness. What's going on? Another question follows when you realize you're restrained. And so you wriggle desperately, attempting to escape your confinement, when a voice rings out, shattering the deathly silence. "Patience, my dearest. It's still too soon." You don't know who you are or how it even happened, but you have fallen prey to this person.
