The Island of Kesmai is a DOS-based RPG that let up to 100 players share a world as early as 1985. It uses text with basic ASCII symbols for visuals, letting you explore, battle monsters, and complete quests. Groups band together to take down tough world bosses while choosing whether to stay in the Basic Game or risk moving to the Advanced Game’s deadlier zones. Characters vanish for good if they die, making every decision carry weight. Running from 1985 to 1995, it added new content over 10 years through expansions. Players still debate strategies in detailed guides, and a fan tool called Hunter lets you watch replays of old matches. Handling 100 concurrent players with text alone was a technical hurdle for its era. Its mix of risk and persistent world design influenced later online games that now use graphics to achieve similar complexity.
