The King of Fighters '99 adds a new layer to its series' competitive formula by letting players build four-member teams. Each squad includes a Striker, a character who bursts into battle for quick attacks before exiting, leaving the core trio intact. The roster features seven main teams plus editable variants and a final boss, all clashing in arcade-perfect 2D brawls. Single-player modes offer story progression while local multiplayer and split-screen options keep matches fresh for head-to-head action. This entry’s standout is its refined mechanics, balancing team tactics with the Striker’s disruptive potential. Despite a cryptic plot about mysterious invites and unresolved rivalries, the focus stays on tight combat and character synergy. Over two decades later, it remains a staple in competitive circles, with consistent re-releases showing its lasting appeal. The mix of strategy and raw button-mashing keeps veterans and newcomers engaged, proving its gameplay still holds up.
Two years have passed since the last King of Fighters tournament and nobody has seen Kyo Kusanagi or Iori Yagami since they defeated Orochi at the climax of the 1997 tournament, but out of the blue, new invitations are sent out to many characters, inviting them to a brand new tournament, though this competition is more of a secretive affair than the ones in '96 and '97.
