The Last Spell launches on March 9, 2023 as an indie tactical RPG from Ishtar Games and The Arcade Crew. Players command a squad of heroes defending the final human bastion against waves of mutated monsters spawned by magical mist. The game blends day-phase city management with night-phase turn-based combat across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. You survive the apocalypse by rebuilding defenses during daylight and repelling hordes after dark. A rogue-lite structure means every run resets your progress but offers new challenges. This is a gritty defense simulation where survival depends on smart positioning and resource allocation rather than brute force alone.
Your typical session splits into two distinct phases. During the day, you assign survivors to repair walls, scavenge for supplies, or heal wounded heroes. You manage limited resources to upgrade buildings before night falls. Once darkness arrives, the game switches to a grid-based tactical combat system where movement and attack points matter deeply. You position your squad to block choke points while magic users cast spells to thin enemy numbers. Each hero has unique abilities that require careful cooldown management. Failure means losing progress, forcing you to restart with new perks but no retained items. The turn-based flow demands patience as you weigh the risk of advancing against the threat of being flanked by fast-moving fiends.
Players and critics agree this title lands solidly in the tactical strategy niche. Metacritic awarded it 82 out of 100 while IGDB shows a 78.2 average from 12 ratings. The community moods lean toward appreciative and focused, reflecting the game's strategic depth rather than mindless action. Average playtime sits around 35 hours for a standard run, though completion rates drop significantly for endgame challenges. Only 14.2 percent of players unlocked the average achievement set across 94 total achievements. The rarest unlock "Unexpected Allies" has not been achieved by anyone yet at 0.00%. Review snippets frequently mention the punishing difficulty curve and the satisfaction of finally clearing a night wave after dozens of attempts.
This game suits players who enjoy methodical planning over fast reflexes. The price point on Steam matches other indie tactical entries, offering decent value for the content depth. With 94 achievements and such low completion rates, expect to invest significant time mastering the combat system. The rogue-lite elements add replayability even if you fail repeatedly against the final bosses. You should pick this up if you want a challenge that respects your time through tight mechanics rather than filler. Avoid it if you need hand-holding or prefer open-world exploration over structured defense scenarios.
It happened. The Schools of Magic of the known world – driven by an insane power craving competition – finally pushed the big red button. We don’t really remember who did what exactly, but the effects were felt everywhere, instantly. A plain and definitive annihilation of 95% of living things in a joyful purple explosion of pure magic. Cities were crumbling, littered with oozing corpses. The air changed too. It became saturated with a more or less compact mist, the only thing that was left from the string of explosions caused by the madness of the mages. Of course, this mist, even if displaying nice and vivid colors, caused death. And sometimes worse. They say that the curious and the fool alike who lived in mist-infested areas came out of there transformed in bloodthirsty monstruosities. After the confusion, came the time of action. Most of the surviving beings succombed to a cosy insanity, blaming and killing each other. Others decided to fight until the very end. They naturally gathered in places where the mist was less thick and tried to keep some cities afloat. The survivors understood quite rapidly the infernal cycle which was now their daily routine. Days were quiet and peaceful. They could take time to organize themselves, heal their wounds and search the surroundings for anything useful. But the nights… The mist thickened and from their bowels unleashes hordes of mutated monsters, craving for blood and magic. So now they have to repel them, until dawn. Stand strong, at all costs. And above all, keep them from destroying our walls, last remnants of their glorious past. And protect those freaking mages. They say they have a plan.
