About The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

This title marks Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.3's first foray into creating a mainline Zelda adventure solely for the handheld market. Released on November 22, 2013, it serves as an indirect sequel to A Link to the Past while updating the classic formula for the 3DS era. Players step back into the kingdom of Hyrule alongside new characters and mechanics that distinguish this entry from its predecessors. The game launches with full world access rather than a linear progression through regions. You explore both Hyrule and the parallel realm of Lorule, using a unique wall-merging ability to solve puzzles and cross areas previously blocked off. It remains a single-player experience designed specifically for portable play.

Gameplay

Your core loop involves exploring interconnected overworlds filled with enemies, items, and secrets. You wield a sword, bow, and various magical tools while managing inventory from the touch screen. A defining feature lets you stick flat against walls to bypass obstacles or slip between the Hyrule and Lorule dimensions. Dungeons follow a non-linear structure allowing you to tackle them in any sequence based on your current progress or item availability. Puzzles often require using the 3D depth effect to solve spatial challenges visible only when viewed through specific angles. You collect key items like the hammer or hookshot to unlock new pathways and face bosses that demand pattern recognition. The map displays real-time data on the lower screen to help you track your location and objectives.

What Players Think

Critics and players have responded with high marks across the board. Metacritic sits at 91 while IGDB holds an 89.8 average from 702 user ratings. The community largely views this as a story-driven experience, though some also highlight its atmospheric qualities and cooperative potential in local play. Average playtime reflects the depth of content available for those seeking completion. Review snippets often praise the freedom to choose dungeon order compared to previous entries. The mood data shows 4 votes for story focus and another 4 for cooperative vibes despite it being a single-player title. Mind-bending puzzles appear in the community perception as well. These numbers suggest a title that resonates with both veteran fans and newcomers seeking a solid adventure.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you enjoy tight controls and open-ended exploration without strict level gates. The price point on the secondary market varies but offers hours of content for under twenty dollars in many cases. You can chase down all achievements or just play through the main story to see Yuga's plan unfold. The wall-merging mechanic adds a layer of strategy that feels fresh rather than gimmicky. It is not perfect as some puzzles rely on trial and error, but the overall design holds up well today. Grab it if you want a polished 3DS experience that respects your time while delivering classic Zelda charm.

Storyline

After capturing Princess Zelda and escaping through a rift into the parallel world of Lorule, the evil sorcerer Yuga plan to use the power of the Seven Mages to resurrect the demon king Ganon. The young adventurer Link is called out to restore peace to the kingdom of Hyrule and is granted the ability to merge into walls after obtaining a magic bracelet from the eccentric merchant Ravio, which allows him to reach previously inaccessible areas and travel between the worlds of Hyrule and Lorule.
