About The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask arrived on the Nintendo 64 in April 2000 as a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. Developed by Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.3, this title builds on the same engine and visual style while pushing the narrative in a darker direction. Players control Link after he gets turned into a Deku Scrub by an imp named Skull Kid. The core premise involves stopping a moon from crashing into the world of Termina within exactly three real-time days. It launched on multiple platforms including the Wii, Wii U, and the original 64DD peripheral. This is not just another dungeon crawler but a time-loop adventure that demands you learn from every failed attempt to save a dying land.

Gameplay

You spend your time managing a strict seventy-two hour cycle before the moon destroys everything. The core loop involves exploring towns, solving puzzles with the ocarina, and talking to NPCs who have their own schedules and stories. You can transform into four different forms like a Goron or Zora to access new areas. Combat relies on active blocking with your shield and using various throwing items rather than just button mashing. The game features a massive amount of optional quests and mini-games that unlock extra content if you take the time. Sessions often feel tense as you race against the clock to complete specific tasks before resetting the day. You must master the controls for each form to survive the frequent boss fights and platforming challenges scattered across the map.

What Players Think

Critics loved this entry with a Metacritic score of 95 out of 100 and an IGDB rating of 88.4 from 837 user ratings. The PlayPile community describes the experience as atmospheric, story-driven, and emotional based on recent vote tallies. Some players even listed it as cooperative despite it being a single-player title which suggests strong character interactions. Average playtime for completionists runs high because of the sheer volume of side quests available. Review snippets highlight the unique time mechanic as a standout feature that keeps tension high throughout the entire campaign. The data shows fans appreciate the depth of interaction with non-playable characters more than in previous installments. This combination of tight mechanics and heavy narrative weight has secured its place as a favorite among serious RPG players.

PlayPile's Take

This game is for players who want a challenging adventure that respects their time but demands strategic planning. The price varies by platform but the value comes from hundreds of hours of content if you chase every achievement. You will face dozens of optional tasks and hidden rewards that require multiple playthroughs to fully uncover. It is not for those who dislike tight time limits or complex character arcs. The three-day cycle creates urgency that most other games in the series fail to match. If you can handle the pressure of a ticking clock while exploring a world full of secrets, this title offers one of the best experiences available on the Nintendo 64 library.

Storyline

After the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link departs on his horse Epona in the Lost Woods and is assaulted by an imp named Skull Kid who dons a mysterious mask, accompanied by the fairies Tael and Tatl. Skull Kid turns Link into a small plant-like creature known as Deku Scrub and takes away his horse and his magical ocarina. Shortly afterward, Tatl joins Link and agrees to help him revert to his native form. A meeting with a wandering mask salesman reveals that the Skull Kid is wearing Majora's Mask, an ancient item used in hexing rituals, which calls forth a menacing moon hovering over the land of Termina. Link has exactly three days to find a way to prevent this from happening.
