About

The Master of the Land is a large interactive fiction game set in a fictional Mediterranean society during the early 1800s. Players navigate a layered narrative where choices shape shifting events like political backroom deals, lavish festivals, and eerie supernatural encounters. The world reacts to decisions with evolving weather, character interactions, and branching story arcs. At the center is Irene, an observer drawn into the chaos of a town where masked revelers, ghostly apparitions, and power struggles collide. Text-driven exploration lets players uncover interconnected mysteries through dialogue, diaries, and environmental storytelling. This game stands out for its dense 80,000-word script and ten interwoven plots, ensuring no two playthroughs match. Community reviews on Steam (72% positive, 1,200+ ratings) highlight its ambitious worldbuilding and atmospheric tension. Standalone elements like a haunting ghost story and satirical takes on aristocratic politics create a distinctive mix of gothic drama and social commentary. The focus on small character moments and unpredictable consequences makes it a slow burn but deeply rewarding for fans of narrative depth.

Storyline

A world that changes with every action. Freedom to explore. Radically different playthroughs. Lots of dancing. People wearing skulls. A historical fantasy set in the early 19th century Mediterranean, The Master of the Land deals with power and paranoia in an age of counter-revolutionary reaction: the aftermath of the Napoleonic wars. During a carnival, dancers dance, politicians conspire and a crying ghost haunts the whole place. The protagonist, Irene, is fascinated and appalled at the same time by everything happening around her.
