You play as Vir, a teen juggling family responsibilities with creative ambitions in a village nestled in India's hills. Between tending crops and chatting with neighbors, you gather stories that fuel your art, specifically, intricate paintings inspired by Indian miniature styles. The game mixes open-world exploration with puzzle-solving as you piece together the region's royal past. Each discovery from villagers adds to your gallery's collection, but the real challenge is balancing your artistic goals with your father's financial struggles. The Palace on the Hill stands out for its quiet blend of cultural storytelling and creative gameplay. Its focus on local legends and hands-on painting mechanics feels fresh, especially as you race to meet deadlines that tie into the narrative. Released in June 2024 on PC and Xbox, it offers a relaxed yet purposeful experience that leans into its setting’s history without overwhelming players. The game’s personal stakes and painterly aesthetics have already drawn praise in early access circles for feeling both intimate and expansive.
The story is about a teenage boy, Vir, set in a hillside village in India. Vir is an aspiring artist and creates art by exploring the ruins of an ancient kingdom in his village. In his explorations, he discovers various things and stories told by the villagers which become references for his artworks. Vir's father, a farmer, is struggling with debt due to failed crops and loses the savings meant for his son's college. During the course of his summer vacation, Vir gets an exciting opportunity to showcase his artworks in a gallery which will earn him a lot of money. To fulfil this quest Vir has to create a series of paintings depicting the royal history of their village. Every player of this game will step into Vir's shoes and explore their village and its historical ruins, find puzzling references for paintings and discover lost legends from various people while also making new friends and doing fun activities.
