About

The Pyramid is one of the first original arcade-style shooters made for the ZX Spectrum in 1983. You play as Ziggy, a character navigating through 15 descending levels of a pyramid, fighting enemies with simple but responsive shooting mechanics. Smooth animations and quick action fill the screen, backed by machine code that pushed the Spectrum’s hardware further than most conversions did. The game focuses on straightforward challenges, surviving each level while avoiding collisions and keeping score, without complicated overworlds or branching paths. What stands out is its technical polish for 1983. The team behind it used machine code to make the game run faster and smoother than typical Spectrum titles, a rarity at the time. With no modern ratings or data to rely on, it’s hard to measure its impact, but its creation by three collaborators (Bob Hamilton as lead) shows early home computer gaming was already fostering creative teamwork. The Pyramid remains a quick, no-frills challenge from one of the first developers to make a name on the Spectrum.
