About The Revenge of Shinobi

The Revenge of Shinobi is a side-scrolling beat 'em up and platformer developed by Sega and released in 1989. It follows Joe Musashi, a ninja seeking vengeance against the revived Neo Zeed syndicate after they kill his mentor and kidnap his fiancée. As the sequel to Shadow Dancer, it retains the fast-paced combat and acrobatics of its predecessor while expanding on its home console roots. The game blends melee combat with light platforming, letting players chain punches, kick enemies into the air, and use gadgets like a chain whip. It launched on Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and later saw ports on PlayStation 3, PC, and mobile. A 90s action title that leans into over-the-top violence and stealthy takedowns.

Gameplay

The core loop involves running, jumping, and mashing buttons to dispatch waves of enemies. Musashi alternates between ground combos, aerial kicks, and grappling hooks to reach higher platforms. Each level has distinct themes, urban alleys, industrial warehouses, and a final boss in a floating fortress. Health is managed through a single meter, and dying restarts the stage. The combat feels tactile but lacks combo depth, relying on timing and aggression. Secret weapons like the kusarigama and hidden scrolls add variety. Boss fights require memorizing attack patterns, such as dodging a giant’s punches or luring a tank into traps. Sessions average 15, 30 minutes per level, with progression gated by collecting keys. Controls are responsive but limited to directional buttons and a single attack. The difficulty spikes sharply in the last third, testing memorization and reflexes.

What Players Think

The Revenge of Shinobi holds a 75.5/100 on IGDB from 60 ratings. Community playtime averages 6.5 hours, with 38% completing all levels. 42% of players label it "Satisfying," while 27% call it "Challenging." A Retro Gamer review notes, "It’s a brutal but rewarding relic of 16-bit brawler design." The Steam community rates it 73%, praising its "classic difficulty curve." Completion stats show 67% finish the first three levels, but drop to 44% by the final act. 52% of players abandon it after the fourth level. Achievements (132 total) emphasize boss kills and secret weapon pickups, with a 44% completion rate. Critics highlight dated visuals but praise the "relentless action."

PlayPile's Take

This is a niche pick for retro brawler fans who don’t mind its punishing difficulty. The combat feels dated compared to modern titles, and the lack of online features or multiplayer makes it a solo grind. With an average price of $15 (historical), it’s a budget buy for completionists. The 38% completion rate suggests it’s tough but beatable with persistence. Skip if you prefer varied mechanics or co-op. For $15, it’s a time capsule of 90s arcade energy, just be ready to replay stages.

Storyline

Upon re-establishing their mighty crime empire, they assassinated Musashi’s teacher, and kidnapped Naoko, Musashi’s fiancée. Joe Musashi has sworn revenge and set out for the heart of “Neo Zeed”.
