The Soul is a third-person action adventure game developed by Antelus Games and released in 2023 for PC. Set in a parallel universe where monsters like vampires and demons live hidden among humans, you play as Max Soul, a Guardian tasked with hunting these creatures. The story blurs the line between hunter and hunted, forcing you to question morality as you track targets and uncover secrets. The game leans into stealth, combat, and role-playing choices, with a narrative that shifts based on your decisions. It’s a gritty, fast-paced experience with a focus on relentless monster-slaying and ethical dilemmas.
You spend most sessions tracking monsters in urban and wilderness environments, using stealth to avoid detection or brute force to take them down. Combat mixes melee attacks, ranged weapons, and environmental traps, with a fluid but slightly clunky control scheme. Each mission starts with surveillance, observing targets, gathering intel, then eliminating them. The game rewards creative approaches: you can burn a zombie horde with gas canisters or pickpocket a vampire’s ID to infiltrate a party. Between missions, you’ll navigate a minimalist hub to upgrade gear or read logs that flesh out the world. The third act introduces a branching storyline where your choices directly impact Max’s fate and the game’s ending.
PlayPile users rate The Soul 7.8/10, with a 68% completion rate and average playtime of 14.5 hours. Community moods are split: 32% call it “Addictive,” praising the story twists, while 27% say it’s “Frustrating” due to combat camera angles and repetitive missions. Critics on OpenCritic average it at 74, noting strong atmosphere but weak boss design. One Steam review writes, “The moral gray areas keep you hooked, even when the combat falters.” Twitch rankings at #75 suggest a niche following, with peak streams focused on speedruns. Achievement hunters report 43 collectibles, including a “Mercy Killer” trophy for sparing targets.
The Soul works best for players craving a story-driven action game with moral stakes. At $29.99, it’s a mid-tier buy with decent replayability from branching choices. While combat and camera issues hold it back, the narrative depth and atmospheric world make it worth a try. Skip if you prioritize polished mechanics over plot, otherwise, it’s a solid 10-hour jaunt into monster-hunting ambiguity.
A 3rd person action adventure game set in a parallel universe. Side by side with us, invisibly live dark creatures. Vampires, zombies, demons and other creatures are very dangerous and always hungry. They have learnt to hide from the Guardians, who have been finding and exterminating bloodthirsty creatures for hundreds of years. Max Soul is a cold-blooded Guardian, capable of destroying any monster in his path. His whole life is an endless hunt, and his next assignment is to identify the monster and eliminate it. But is everything so unambiguous? Is there really only good and evil? The player will have to get into the role of Max, dive headfirst into the hunt and understand the soul of the protagonist.
