About

The Telephone is a first-person horror game centered on figuring out a disturbing mystery. You play as Roberta, trapped in a dim house and the eerie town of Lonely Plain. The goal is to piece together fragmented memories by exploring claustrophobic spaces, scavenging clues, and interacting with a broken telephone that sporadically connects to unknown voices. The gameplay leans on slow tension and environmental storytelling, with the environment itself amplifying the sense of dread. A second character appears in a neighboring room, creating a faint but unsettling sense of shared struggle. What sets it apart is its ability to translate anxiety into gameplay. The lack of combat or jump scares shifts focus to psychological unease, with sounds and shadows doing most of the heavy lifting. The telephone acts as both a narrative device and a source of frustration, mirroring Roberta’s helplessness. Though short on action, its minimalist approach and oppressive atmosphere have earned it a 78% on Metacritic, with critics praising its mood over mechanics. Not a genre-definer, but a tightly wound experience that lingers.
