About The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

The Astronauts released this indie adventure in late 2014 for PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. You step into the shoes of Paul Prospero, an occult detective who receives a frantic letter from twelve-year-old Ethan Carter. The boy lives in Red Creek Valley, Wisconsin, and his disappearance points to something far darker than a simple kidnapping. Paul arrives to find evidence of recent violence and unsettling supernatural events throughout the mining town. This single-player title mixes environmental storytelling with puzzle solving as you uncover what happened to the missing child. The game leans heavily on atmosphere rather than combat, asking players to investigate clues scattered across a beautifully rendered landscape that feels alive yet wrong.

Gameplay

You move through Red Creek Valley using a first-person perspective with standard walking and interaction controls. There are no health bars or enemies to fight. Instead, you spend your time examining objects, reading letters, and observing environmental details that hint at the story. Paul uses supernatural abilities to see past illusions and uncover hidden truths about the murders occurring in town. Typical sessions involve wandering through dense forests and abandoned buildings while piecing together timelines of events. The game forces you to think like a detective rather than an action hero. You must connect disparate clues to understand the narrative without traditional mission markers guiding every step.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community has rated this title with an IGDB score of 78.7 out of 100 based on 391 user ratings. Players describe the vibe as primarily story-driven, though some also tag it as cooperative or wholesome. Most users spend a significant amount of time exploring every corner of the map to find all secrets. Review snippets often highlight the visual fidelity and the emotional weight of the narrative. The community moods suggest players appreciated the mystery but found the pacing slow in certain sections. Only a fraction of users completed the game without rushing, indicating the experience demands patience. The high completion rate for those who stick with it proves the payoff is worth the initial investment of time.

PlayPile's Take

This game suits players who prefer walking simulators and narrative mysteries over fast-paced action. You will need to invest roughly six hours to finish the story if you explore thoroughly. The price remains reasonable for the amount of content provided by The Astronauts. There are no major achievements to chase, but finding every clue feels rewarding on its own. We recommend this for fans of atmospheric horror who do not mind slower gameplay loops. It is a solid choice for a quiet evening when you want to focus on story rather than reflexes. Avoid this if you need constant combat or clear objectives at all times.
