The World of Kung Fu: Dragon and Eagle is a pixel-art RPG built around turn-based combat and branching choices. You play a nameless wanderer navigating a fractured China filled with rival martial arts sects. Each decision shapes alliances, skills, and reputation as you juggle rivalries between clans, political tensions, and personal growth. Battles mix tactical positioning with school-specific abilities, requiring balance between offense and resource management. Exploration unfolds through a grid-based map, with encounters tied to historical events and philosophical conflicts. Set during the turbulent 1150 AD Song Dynasty era, the game weaves real-world kingdoms and ideological clashes into its narrative. ChillyRoom’s design emphasizes deep character customization and long-term strategy, with over 20 martial arts schools offering distinct playstyles. While combat pacing feels deliberate, the lack of multiplayer or co-op options narrows its appeal. Early access feedback highlights its detailed worldbuilding but notes a steep learning curve for new players.
The game is set in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty (1150 AD) when the Southern Han people formed the Song country in the south, and the Jurchen people formed the Jin country in the north, leading to conflict. At the same time, the Western Liao, Western Xia, Tubo, and Dali kingdoms were scattered around the periphery, making it a turbulent time in China and a common era for Chinese martial arts stories. It is also a historical period where Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism flourished in Chinese history. Players assume the role of a novice in the martial arts world and become embroiled in major events, ultimately changing the course of the martial arts world.
