About

Thrust casts you as a spacecraft pilot tasked with hauling pods through treacherous caves while battling physics and enemy fire. Your ship's tractor beam lets you grab floating pods, but the connection creates a rigid tether that swings wildly under gravity and momentum. Navigating narrow tunnels without crashing into walls is half the challenge, especially when dodging turrets that guard each planet. Shifting fuel and shield resources adds tension, since running dry on either means instant death. What sticks is the clever use of Newtonian mechanics, turning simple movement into a puzzle of timing and trajectory. Players must balance offensive fire, shield activation, and fuel conservation while racing against reactor-triggered planet explosions. Originally released in 1986, it’s a tight, reflex-driven arcade experience that still tests coordination on retro hardware like the C64 or Spectrum. The risk-reward loop of optional high-score runs, snatching pods before blowing up entire planets, keeps things brisk and replayable.

Storyline

Each planet has turrets which fire bullets at the ship, which can be destroyed with a single shot, and a reactor which powers the defence system of each planet. If the reactor is shot enough the turrets will cease firing for a short amount of time. Hitting the reactor with many bullets causes it to go critical and destroy the planet in 10 seconds - the ship must escape into space before this happens, with or without the pod (more points are gained if the pod is present). Fuel is needed to manœuvre the ship and can be collected with the tractor beam, if the ship runs out of fuel the whole game is over. A shield is also available, although when activated it uses fuel and the ship cannot shoot.
