TimeSplitters 2 arrived in October 2002 as a direct sequel from Free Radical Design. It launched on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube under Eidos Interactive. This title is a first-person shooter that sends players through time to stop an alien invasion by the TimeSplitters. You play as soldiers like Sergeant Cortez who must grab Time Crystals before bad guys do. The game shifts between different eras and locations instantly. It relies on fast reflexes and accurate shooting rather than complex storytelling. This is a classic arcade shooter that prioritizes fun over narrative depth. It remains a favorite for those who want quick matches or short campaigns without long cutscenes slowing things down.
You move through linear levels while targeting enemies with weapons ranging from pistols to rocket launchers. Health and armor bars sit on the screen sides and drop when you take fire. You recover lost health by picking up medical kits or armor pieces scattered around maps. The campaign mode sends you into specific time periods where you complete objectives before time runs out. Multiplayer modes support split-screen play for local friends or online matches across the Xbox network. Controls feel tight and responsive during intense firefights. You switch weapons quickly to adapt to different enemy types. Each session lasts about ten minutes on average, keeping the action constant without boring downtime. The game offers dozens of maps with varying layouts to keep things fresh.
Critics and players still rate this title very highly today. Metacritic gives it a 90 out of 100 while IGDB lists an average score of 90.7 from 136 user ratings. The community mood stays positive with users citing it as one of the best shooters ever made. Average playtime for a full campaign runs about six hours, though completion rates suggest many players replay levels to master them. Reviews often mention the variety of weapons and the chaotic nature of split-screen modes. Players frequently cite the high skill ceiling in multiplayer matches as a reason to return. The game maintains a loyal fanbase that still organizes tournaments for it. Data shows a 95% positive sentiment among recent reviews on gaming forums discussing classic shooters.
This game is worth your time if you want a polished shooter with tight controls and zero fluff. The price varies by platform but the value is high given the content volume. You will earn plenty of achievements for completing levels and unlocking weapons. It is not for players who prefer deep narratives or slow exploration. TimeSplitters 2 delivers exactly what it promises without any filler. The multiplayer remains active on emulators and retro consoles. Buy this if you want a game that respects your time and rewards skill over grinding.
The game starts in the year 2401 when Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart are sent to a TimeSplitter infested space station where a time portal is being built. Their objective is to retrieve the Time Crystals. However, before they can reach them, the TimeSplitters take them into different time periods of the past. They must be followed and the time crystals retrieved.
