Tobal No 1 is a 3D fighting game with a single player story mode that blends brawling and exploration. Released in 1996 by a new studio spun out of Square, it lets players use three dimensional movement to line up behind the back strikes. A key mechanic is the grapple system where holding an opponent lets you choose from multiple throw options based on button inputs. The PlayStation original supports both solo campaigns and head to head matches. The game pushed hardware limits with smoothly shaded characters rendered in 640x480 resolution, a high definition display before the term became common. Designed by a developer with Tekken and Virtua Fighter experience, it included a Final Fantasy VII demo as a bonus. While not a major commercial hit, it remains a curiosity for its early experiments with 3D fighter mechanics and production polish. Some retro fighting game fans cite it as a forgotten proof of concept.
