Wield blasters and funky moves as ToeJam, Earl, and Latisha chase stolen music across Earth's wild landscapes. This platformer-RPG hybrid tasks you with collecting 12 sacred albums while fending off clueless humans and dodging hazards. Switch between characters to exploit weaknesses and solve puzzles. Split-screen co-op lets two players tackle levels together, though the humor and chaos often feel best experienced alone. The game’s irreverent tone and 90s nostalgia define its charm. Latisha’s sharp personality adds fresh energy to the duo, and the parody of hip-hop culture remains bold, if dated. While not a critical darling at launch, its cult following persists among fans of quirky, retro-style adventures. The Anti-Funk’s showdown and over-the-top gags keep the experience lively, even if the platforming can feel clunky by modern standards.
ToeJam & Earl III follows the extraterrestrial protagonists ToeJam and Earl, who starred in the series' previous games, and a new female character named Latisha. ToeJam is three-legged and red; Earl is overweight and orange. Both characters have been considered parodies of American hip-hop and urban culture. Latisha has been variously described as "feisty" and "brimming with attitude" by critics. The three characters journey to Earth, in order to retrieve the stolen twelve Sacred Albums of Funk and return them to Lamont the Funkopotamus. Levels take place on terrains that represent Earth's ecosystems. The game's ultimate antagonist is the Anti-Funk, whose defeat will "save the world from all that is unfunky." The "funk" has been described as a parody of the Force from Star Wars, with the Anti-Funk being the dark side.
