ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron is a platform adventure where two alien troublemakers scavenge, fight, and collect items across colorful levels. Players control ToeJam and Earl as they battle stowaway Earthlings causing chaos on their funk-infused home planet. The game emphasizes co-op play, letting two players swap roles mid-level to solve puzzles and access hidden areas. Unlike the first game’s rogue-like randomness, this sequel leans into structured platforming with a focus on action and exploration. The game’s sharp visuals and funky soundtrack stand out, earning praise for style and energy despite polarizing reception. While some fans balked at the shift from the original’s chaotic randomness, others appreciate the tighter controls and teamwork mechanics. It remains a notable Mega Drive title, listed among GamesRadar’s top Genesis games. Available on multiple platforms decades later, it’s a divisive but influential entry in the series that split longtime fans but introduced the duo to new audiences.
The game follows on the events of the first game, in which funky aliens ToeJam and Earl crash landed on Earth. After managing to rebuild their spaceship and returning safely to their home planet of Funkotron, the duo soon learn that a bunch of Earthlings had stowed away on their craft and have now invaded Funkotron.[3] With the humans spreading panic across the planet's citizens, even scaring the source of all funk, Lamont the Funkapotomus, away to another dimension, it is up to ToeJam and Earl to clean up the mess they've made and send all the Earthlings they brought with them back to where they came from.
