About

Tokyo Shadow is a 1996 FMV adventure where you play as Hedei, a ghost in Shibuya, Tokyo, after a demon kills him during a date. You navigate split-screen perspectives of the living and spiritual worlds to track down supernatural threats while piecing together the mystery. Gameplay revolves around clicking locations to gather clues, interacting with characters through branching dialogue, and battling demons in turn-based sequences. Your decisions shape the story with multiple endings, blending horror and detective work in a static-jpeg, full-motion video format typical of the era. Based on a light novel by Aya Nishitani, whose work also inspired the Megami Tensei series, the game leans into eerie atmosphere and nonlinear storytelling. Though buried by time, it’s remembered for its ambitious structure and moody setting. Fans of 90s FMV experiments and occult mysteries might find its ghost-hunting grind and cryptic plot rewarding. Published by Taito, it remains a niche artifact of early PlayStation-era adventure games.

Storyline

An FMV adventure based on the eponymous light novel series by Aya Nishitani (the mind behind the Digital Devil Story novels, the basis of the Megami Tensei series). This horror-detective mystery adventure game takes place within the streets of a modern day Tokyo, in the town of Shibuya. The protagonist, Hedei is killed by a demon while going on a date with his girlfriend and subsequently becomes a ghost. He then becomes able travel between the spiritual world and the real world, defeating the demons roaming around the town, and finally, destroying the demon Megiddo. The player can go around town looking for clues and finding the demons to advance the game. The game features different endings depending on the player's choices.
