About Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider launched on October 24, 1996 as a defining moment for 3D adventure games. Core Design created this title while Eidos Interactive published it, and Square Enix now holds the rights. You play as Lara Croft, a British archaeologist hunting ancient artifacts across Peru, Greece, Rome, and Egypt. The story kicks off when she retrieves a piece of the Atlantean Scion in Peru, only to be betrayed. She must chase down the remaining pieces before villains get them. This single-player experience originally hit DOS and Sega Saturn before appearing on PlayStation, N64, and later modern consoles like PS3 and PSP. It set the standard for platforming puzzles in a 3D world.

Gameplay

You control Lara through detailed tombs filled with traps and enemies. The core loop involves climbing ledges, swimming through flooded chambers, and shooting at jaguars or other hostile creatures. Every level is a puzzle box where you need specific keys or items to unlock new areas. You manage inventory carefully since ammo is limited. Combat feels weighty and requires precise timing rather than button mashing. The camera angle shifts dynamically as she moves through tight corridors or jumps across wide gaps. A typical session has you memorizing platforming routes while solving environmental riddles to progress toward the final artifact.

What Players Think

Critics and players have kept this title relevant for decades. IGDB lists a score of 82.7 out of 100 based on 461 ratings, which shows strong lasting appeal. The PlayPile community data suggests an intense vibe with four voters selecting that mood, while three others lean toward chill or casual playstyles. Two users marked it as competitive, likely referring to speedrunning attempts. Average playtime figures indicate a substantial commitment given the puzzle density. Review snippets often highlight how the game influenced the genre without using modern hand-holding mechanics. The ratings remain high despite the game being nearly thirty years old.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth playing if you enjoy challenging platforming and environmental puzzles over fast-paced action. You get a solid single-player campaign for a low price on retro platforms or via re-releases. Completionists should note that finding every collectible adds significant time to the run. The achievement data shows dedicated players returning to find hidden secrets many times. It is not a perfect experience by modern standards, but the level design holds up remarkably well. Skip this if you want open worlds, but buy it for a classic 3D adventure structure that defined a generation.
