About Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness marks a shift for the series as the sixth entry released in 2003 by Core Design. Players control Lara Croft across PC, Mac, and PlayStation 2 systems in a story where she is framed for murdering her mentor Werner Von Croy. The game demands you evade police while hunting a secret alliance of powerful figures linked to an ancient Alchemist. This title attempted to modernize the franchise with darker tones and more complex mechanics than its predecessors. It stands as a controversial chapter that tried to reinvent the formula rather than simply repeat it.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time managing inventory and sneaking past enemies instead of rushing forward. New moves like ducking, wall-hugging, and close-quarters combat change how you approach obstacles. The controls require you to shim along cables and push heavy boxes to clear paths. Combat feels clunky with a limited selection of firearms and ammunition scattered throughout the levels. You collect artifacts and money to upgrade skills as you progress through Parisian catacombs and old monasteries. Platforming involves precise timing for flying leaps and dodging attacks. Each session forces you to balance stealth mechanics with traditional puzzle solving in these large, dark environments.

What Players Think

Review data shows mixed feelings from the player base. The IGDB rating sits at 61.9 out of 100 based on 113 user scores. Many players report an average playtime that stretches longer than expected due to repetitive puzzle sections and frustrating camera angles. Community moods often reflect frustration with the unfinished state of the final product compared to earlier entries. Some critics praise the ambitious stealth additions, yet others cite technical issues as a major deterrent. Achievement completion rates suggest that many users abandon the game before reaching the end. The data indicates a divided audience where some value the narrative depth while others find the mechanics too broken to enjoy fully.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth a look only if you want to see what went wrong for Core Design during their final years. The price point varies by platform, but the completion rate suggests most people do not finish it. You will encounter significant bugs that interrupt gameplay flow and obscure the intended stealth mechanics. Achievements are available but difficult to earn without guides due to hidden traps. It serves as a historical footnote for fans of the franchise rather than a must-play experience. Skip this one unless you need to study how ambitious development can derail a beloved series.

Storyline

A series of grisly murders brings Lara into conflict with a sinister Alchemist from the past, and a secret alliance of powerful individuals shrouded in mystery. Accused of the murder of her one time mentor, Werner Von Croy, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run. Pursued by the police, she follows the Alchemist into a dark world of blood, betrayal and vengeance where it is up to her to defeat this unholy alliance, and stop them from unleashing their incredible powers on the world.
