Toonsylvania casts you as Igor, a lab assistant who accidentally blows up his gentle monster pal Phil by testing four wacky inventions. Now you’ve got to navigate 15 chaotic levels of spooky terrain, collecting Phil’s scattered body parts and the gadgets that caused the disaster. Each level throws obstacles like lurking enemies and environmental hazards in your path. You’ll switch between diving suits, propeller helmets, and fireproof gear to solve platforming puzzles while chucking tools and weapons at foes. The game leans into its cartoonish tone with exaggerated animations and goofy enemy designs that keep the tension light despite the urgency of reassembling Phil before his creator returns. A standout is the creative use of shifting abilities to tackle varied environments, from haunted castles to underground labs. While the Game Boy Color’s limitations show in basic visuals, the tight controls and escalating difficulty keep it engaging. Released in 2000, it’s a brisk platformer with a humorous twist on monster-movie tropes. The single-player focus and checkmark-based level design appeal to fans of old-school 2D action, though the dated presentation might not wow modern players.
