Top Gunner casts you as a dual-role driver and shooter navigating war-torn maps in a mission to extract prisoners. You control a jeep's movements while toggling to a top-down shooter view to blast enemies on the move. The split-screen co-op lets two players take turns or team up to handle both tasks at once. Roads twist through forests, deserts, and urban zones filled with snipers and tanks. Ammo and health pickups are sparse so you learn to balance speed with precision. Konami's 1986 arcade hit leveraged its era's tech to let players tackle the same maps solo or with a partner. The co-op mode was a standout feature at the time letting one player focus on driving while the other handles fire. With ports on DOS and 8-bit systems it became a staple of retro arcades. Its simple mechanics and aggressive pacing kept players coming back for better scores. Over 35 years later its split-screen mode still feels ahead of its time.
