About Total War: Shogun 2

Total War: Shogun 2 dropped in March 2011 from The Creative Assembly and Sega. It lands on PC, Linux, and Mac as a hybrid of turn-based grand strategy and real-time tactics set in 16th-century Japan. You pick one of nine clans, or ten with the Ikko-Ikki DLC, to lead your warlord toward unifying the fractured empire. The game mixes diplomacy, espionage, and province management on a large campaign map before throwing you into massive battles where every unit matters. It feels like running a feudal state while simultaneously commanding thousands of samurai and ashigaru on the battlefield.

Gameplay

Your day-to-day loop involves managing provinces, researching upgrades, and deploying agents like ninja assassins or geisha spies to sabotage rivals. The campaign layer lets you recruit troops, build cities, and negotiate treaties between turns. When combat erupts, the view shifts instantly to real-time tactics where positioning matters more than raw numbers. You issue orders for your units to form lines, flank enemies, or charge with spears while managing morale and fatigue. Battles feature hundreds of units clashing in detailed terrain that affects movement and line of sight. The interface keeps track of income, politics, and army supplies so you can micromanage without getting lost in menus.

What Players Think

Critics and players love this title, with a Metacritic score of 90 and an IGDB rating of 85.5 based on over 200 reviews. The PlayPile community spends an average of 45 hours per playthrough, indicating deep engagement beyond the main story. Completion rates sit at 68%, showing that many players see campaigns through to victory or defeat. User moods lean heavily toward "satisfied" and "engaged," with frequent mentions of the AI's tactical depth in forum discussions. Review snippets highlight the seamless transition between map management and battles as a standout feature. The game remains a top seller despite its age, often hitting historical lows around $5.64 on 2Game.

PlayPile's Take

This is a solid purchase for strategy fans who want deep mechanics without modern complexity traps. At roughly $5.64, it offers immense value compared to modern equivalents. The achievement list contains 50 milestones, encouraging multiple clan runs and difficulty challenges. You will spend hours tweaking armies and managing diplomacy before the final battle decides your fate. It is not for players who want quick matches or story-driven narratives. If you enjoy micromanaging resources and commanding large armies on complex maps, this title delivers consistent results without requiring constant updates or microtransactions.

Storyline

In the darkest age of Japan, endless war leaves a country divided. It is the middle of the 16th Century in Feudal Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. Ten legendary warlords strive for supremacy as conspiracies and conflicts wither the empire. Only one will rise above all to win the heart of a nation as the new shogun…The others will die by his sword.
