Touhou: Blossom Blade is a 3D action-platformer where you play as Youmu, a sword-wielding shrine maiden trying to prove herself to her boss, Yuyuko. It’s a spin on the classic Touhou Project bullet-dodging formula, but here you’re the one dodging instead of firing. Ankake Spa made it, and it launched on PC and Switch in January 2026. The game leans into fast-paced platforming, with Youmu’s three unique skills letting you slash, teleport, or chain attacks mid-air. The story? Youmu gets dared to beat Reimu, Gensokyo’s go-to problem-solver, in a duel. It’s a short but punchy single-player romp for fans of the series who want a fresh twist on its chaotic combat.
You spend most of the game in tight arenas filled with enemies and bullet patterns you must dodge. Youmu’s three skills, slice, dash, and a charged overhead strike, are key for navigating levels. Each stage mixes platforming (leaping over traps, scaling walls) with sudden boss fights. You build a combo meter by landing hits, which unlocks stronger attacks. The difficulty spikes mid-game, with stages requiring pixel-perfect dodges and rapid skill switches. Boss battles are the highlight: Reimu’s phases force you to adapt your strategy, like countering her energy blasts with timed teleports. Controls are snappy but unforgiving; one misstep sends you back to a checkpoint. Sessions typically last 15, 20 minutes, with the final boss alone taking 30+ minutes to beat for completionists.
PlayPile users gave it an 86% user rating, matching its 82% critic score. But 48% of players never finished it, average playtime is 9.5 hours. The achievement list (36 total) is tough, with 12 requiring flawless runs. Community moods skew split: 60% thrill, 30% frustration, 10% bored. One user wrote, “The final level is a gauntlet of rage,” while another praised, “Boss designs feel like Touhou at its peak.” Completion rates drop after Stage 4, where the game adds mid-air combat. Critics liked the tight mechanics but called the difficulty curve “unforgiving.” Over 60% of players who beat it did so on Switch, citing better control precision.
Blossom Blade is a must-play for hardcore Touhou fans and bullet-hell veterans. At $29.99, it’s a risky buy unless you’ve mastered series staples like Eastern or Subterranean. The 36 achievements add replay value, but 48% of players won’t even finish. If you’re okay with repeated deaths and enjoy mastering skill combos, it’s worth the price. Skip it if you prefer casual action or struggle with precision platforming. It’s not a genre-definer, but for its target audience, it’s a satisfying challenge with sharp, responsive combat.
Konpaku Youmu works as the gardener, security, and swordsmanship instructor for Saigyouji Yuyuko, mistress of Hakugyokurou. One day, upon Youmu scolding her mistress for slacking off in her training, Yuyuko told her "with your lack of skill, there won't be any training." Yuyuko then challenged her to prove herself by defeating the shrine maiden who'd resolved Gensokyo's incidents time and time again: She was to go and defeat Hakurei Reimu. Youmu wasn't happy with this, but showing awareness of her inexperience, she accepted her mistress's conditions and set off for Gensoukyou. Will she be able to overcome the dangers awaiting her, defeat Reimu, and prove her skills to Yuyuko?
