Touhou Shinjutou: Hollow Song of Birds is a bullet-hell shooter set in the Gensokyo mythos. Time halts mysteriously, leaving Sakuya Izayoi to rescue Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame from a frozen prison. Players guide the trio through labyrinthine stages packed with enemies and relentless patterns. A core gem system lets you equip seven distinct abilities, each altering combat flow with options like shields, homing attacks, or rapid fire. Precision and power management replace brute force. The game’s strength lies in its tight mechanics and deep integration with the Touhou universe. The gem system offers surprising flexibility, encouraging experimentation with loadouts. Backed by Wanwan’s energetic soundtrack, the 2019 release holds up as a polished entry in the series. With stages scaling to player skill and a narrative that feels at home among the franchise’s quirks, it remains a favorite among fans.
One day, time is stopped in Gensokyo. Sakuya Izayoi, being unaffected by this as a result of her abilities, travels to the Hakurei Shrine to free the two main incident solvers, Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, from their eternal time prison. These three then set out to find the culprit behind this incident.
