Tremulous mixes FPS action with strategic base-building in a competitive arena. Two teams clash as either aliens or humans each with distinct progression paths. Humans earn credits from kills to buy weapons and upgrades while aliens gain kills to evolve into stronger classes. Both sides construct in-game structures that handle spawning defense and healing. Players must balance shooting and building since losing spawn points locks teammates out of the action. The game’s standout is its dual focus on combat and resource management. Unlike traditional shooters progression feels earned through either tactical evolution or economic growth. Launched in 2006 it still runs on Windows Linux and Mac with no cost to play. The open-source nature keeps it accessible though the learning curve demands attention to team roles.

Storyline

Player advancement is different depending on which team you are on. As a human, players are rewarded with credits for each alien kill. These credits may be used to purchase new weapons and upgrades from the "Armoury". The alien team advances quite differently. Upon killing a human foe, the alien is able to evolve into a new class. The more kills gained the more powerful the classes available.
