Tyrian is a fast-paced arcade shooter from 1995 that pits players against waves of enemies in horizontal scrolling levels. You control a spacecraft blasting through stages filled with bosses and power-ups. The game supports single-player runs or teaming up with a friend in co-op mode. Originally released for DOS and Windows it leans into classic 90s shooter mechanics with straightforward controls and challenging progression. After sitting in archives for years the game became free to play in 2004 with its artwork later released under open licenses. Created by Jason Emery and featuring art by Daniel Cook it’s a product of mid-90s indie development. Though its pixel art and chiptune music feel dated the tight shooting loop and cooperative play keep it engaging for retro fans. Still hosted on Epic Games’ site it’s a nostalgic pick for those missing old-school arcade action.
