UFO: Aftershock is a post-apocalyptic tactical strategy-RPG where you command a squad of survivors fighting to reclaim Earth. Set in 2054, the game shifts from the rigid politics of a floating city to the scorched surface below. Combat plays in real-time with pause, letting you issue commands on the fly while managing limited resources, soldier skills, and environmental hazards. Missions blend base defense, scavenging, and exploration as you balance long-term survival with immediate threats. The isometric 3D view keeps the action tight, emphasizing positioning and cover over brute force. The game stands out for its tense survival mechanics and bleak atmosphere. Unlike many strategy titles, it demands careful planning to stretch supplies and avoid casualties, with permadeath adding weight to every decision. While the story hinges on a familiar "rescue the last hope of humanity" premise, the mix of real-time tactics and post-apocalyptic dread gives it legs. Players often cite the claustrophobic base-building and unpredictable enemy encounters as highlights, though the dated visuals might not wow modern audiences.
After the life support system on the Laputa (orbital space station/city) fails, the peoples of the Laputa revolt against the Human Council, and an armed conflict ensues. As a result, the Laputa's engines explode and the city is destroyed, killing almost everyone on it. The few survivors escape in space shuttles and find another deserted Laputa in space. This Laputa is equipped with a landing pod to Earth, rumored to be long lost. Now you lead the remaining survivors of the Laputa and re-establish contact with Earth and the mysteries within.
