Ultraman: Chou Toushi Gekiden throws you into a chaotic mix of genres. You switch between side-scrolling shooting, platform jumping, and punchy combat as a giant Ultraman. The Game Boy’s tiny screen struggles to keep up with the frantic action, but the controls stay tight enough to handle the shifting mechanics. Each stage feels like a quick burst of mayhem, with few breaks between the different gameplay styles. This 1994 release leans hard into its Ultraman roots, crammed with monsters and sci-fi nonsense. It’s one of the few games from the era that tries to pack three genres into one cartridge. Fans of old-school action might recognize it as a relic, but its dated charm and relentless pace make it a curiosity for collectors. The Game Boy version isn’t the best in the series but it’s a glimpse into a time when genre-hopping was less common.
